The conflict between patriarchal authority and freedom in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s writings

Nathaniel Hawthorne was a descendant of a long line of Puritan ancestors including John Hathorne, a presiding magistrate in the Salem witch trials. In order to distance himself from his family's shameful involvement in those trials, he even changed his last name by adding the "w". However  it’s the New England Puritanism and its legacy that provided Hawthorne with the means of exploring many of the themes that concerned him deeply, the conflict between religious authority and an impulse to various freedoms being a major one. At the meeting we are going to discuss his first and most famous romantic novel ‘The Scarlet Letter’.

Место проведения: Центр американской культуры, ул. Николаямская, д.1, метро Таганская, Китай-Город, Марскистская.
